The EFPT Aqualeto Cup - Day 1

DIFFERENT EYEWEAR

After the EFPT crew arrived in Russia two days early to check out the location of this new tour-stop and to make sure everything will be ready for the big show, today has been the first official day of the competition.

With big names on the registration list and a decent wind forecast we decided for an early start this morning to make the most of what was meant to be some great conditions. The registration for the last riders who arrived last night started at 8.00 am followed by the skippers meeting at 8.30 am. Already at that time it was obvious that the onshore wind wasn't sufficient to run a proper competition so the first possible start was postponed to 9.30 and from then on onwards with announcement made every 30 minutes by race director Tom Hartmann.

The wind was supposed to be strongest in the morning and get less during the day, so did our expectations of running the first single elimination. Happy about this fact was definitely Canadian freestyle windsurfer Phil Soltysiak (Starboard) who had to stop over in Moscow to write one of his last exams. Rumors go round that he used some of his voodoo magic (http://vimeo.com/66464290) to make the wind disappear until he is here, but we don't have any 100% confirmation of that...

After the chances for the freestyle contest today began to diminish, the organizers decided to run a climbing competition at the huge climbing wall within the Aqualeto Sports Hotel. Our new cooperating partner DIFFERENT EYEWEAR (http://www.different-eye.com/) immediately jumped in as the sponsor for the prize of the first place: a sick pair of Different sunnies from their brand new collection. Almost all the riders gathered together at 4.00 pm for the climbing competition, being both really competitive and motivated. The contest was carried out with two runs up two different walls of two different levels. The rider with the fastest combined time was the winner. It become clear quite fast who has done climbing before and who was new to it, nevertheless everybody had a lot of fun and the spectators had a great time watching the pros fighting for the best time. The result after two runs: 1st place and winner of the DIFFERENT sunglasses Adam Sims (Sailloft) with a super fast combined time of 39 seconds, 2nd place Adrian Beholz (Sailloft/Fanatic) in just 42 seconds and 3rd place Rick Jendrusch (F2/Severne) completed it in 46 seconds combined.

At 9.00pm tonight we are going to have a little riders presentation at the beach with no rush to get to bed tonight as the forecast for tomorrow doesn't look particularly promising. The skippers meeting will be held at 10.00am with the first possible start at 10.30am. Furthermore we are going to run a sunset tow in training session tomorrow night for the planned tow-in competition with 1.000€ prize money at the end of this week.
