Fresh Faces: Marco Lufen
German online magazine windsurfers.de asked Steven van Broeckhoven if the European Freestyle Pro Tour is a talent pool. The 2-times EFPT and current PWA champion replied as follows, "Of course!… Now there are many kids which will be discussed later." In order to introduce these kids to you the EFPT decided to start its "Fresh Faces" interview series. Fresh Face nr.1 is Marco Lufen.
EFPT: Hi Marco. May I please you to introduce yourself?
Marco Lufen: Hi, okay well as you already said my name is Marco. I just turned 18 a couple of days ago. I am from Germany. I live in a small town near Düsseldorf called Krefeld and I still go to school. I started windsurfing in Greece or more specifically in Finikounda, a little village on the Pelepones, when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I could only surf during the holidays so my progress was not that big. Within the years my enthusiasm in windsurfing got bigger and bigger, so my parents and I went to windier Greek Islands. The first was Rhodes where I participated at the JP/Neilpryde Young Guns Camp. While being there I could “win” a small competition in the Camp and then it all started. I received an email from Miriam Kerstin (marketing manager at JP/Neilpryde) and she offered me a sponsorship. I was super happy because this doesn’t happen every day. I agreed and since then I get support from JP and Neilpryde and very recently “Animal” as well.
EFPT: Continentseven.com featured your video from Karpathos. Can you tell us a little bit about your stay there?
ML: First of all thanks to continentseven.com to put it online. Yeah, this year my parents and I decided to go to Karpathos because of the wind guarantee during the summer months. I stayed there 6 weeks and there was just one day without wind. We travelled there by camping car…long journey…! I travelled together with a friend of mine. Down there I met Dominik Schöntahl (Fanatic/North Sails) and a lot of other friends from the last year. The conditions were really gusty and choppy. Sometimes I was really angry because it is nearly all the time from zero to hundred! And the gust blasts you over the board! I could stick a few new moves, which was actually really cool for me. We also went a lot for partying…
EFPT: Are there any other trips planned for this winter?
ML: This winter I will travel to Dahab, because I have never been there before. And for a windsurfer it is a must to go there one time in life! I will travel with Julian Wiemar a friend of mine from Cologne. We surf a lot at the Netherlands. Hopefully it will be windy!
EFPT: Can you give us a little outlook on your career in freestyle windsurfing?
ML: Well an outlook in my freestyle career… that’s a good question. First of all I want to finish school. Then I want to participate in national events like the “German freestyle battle”. But my problem is that I can only surf at the weekend because near my hometown there is just a small lake and there is 1 time per year good wind. So quiet frustrating. After finishing school I want to enter some EFPT-Events and then I will look how everything turns out. Hopefully good and maybe bigger events! But we will see…;-). I am very pleased with my sponsors and I hope it will last for a very long time.
